Energy Sources
The sun is the main energy source of our universe. On planet earth the Energy sources are quite diverse; some are from biological origin while the others come from mineral solid, liquid oils and gases in geological formations. The rests are from harnessing the forces of nature in the form of solar, wind, geothermal or river and ocean waves.
Broadly speaking energy sources are typically classified as;
Renewable sources of energy and non-renewable sources of energy.
- Renewable Sources
Renewable sources of energy are not only available in abundance as part of our natural environment but are also sustainable and safe for the environment.
Examples of renewable sources of energy are: Solar, geothermal, wind, biomass, hydropower, tidal and wave energy.
- Non-renewable Sources
A non-renewable source of energy is a natural resource that is found underneath the earth. This type of energy resources do not replenish at the same speed at which it is used. They take millions of years to replenish.
Examples of non-renewable resources are: coal, petroleum oil, natural gas and nuclear fuels.
