INTERNET
The internet is a network of interconnected networks and electronic devices using established set of protocols and related standards. It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic, business and government networks both locally and globally.
The main components of the internet consist of the following; computer hardware, computer software and telecommunication infrastructure.
The computer hardware components of the internet are; computer servers, routers, switches, modems, network interface cards (NICs), cables and fiber optics.
The computer software components of the internet are; operating systems, web servers, web browsers, E-mail servers, data management systems, network protocols and firewalls and security software.
The infrastructure components of the internet are; undersea cables, fiber optic cables, cell towers, satellites, data centers, network exchanges and internet service providers.
There are several types of internet connections and they are; Broadband, DSL (digital subscriber line), cable internet, fiber optic internet, satellite internet and mobile internet.
Broadband internet connections use a high speed internet connection that includes DSL, cable, fiber optics and satellite.
DSL (digital subscriber line) uses existing phone lines to deliver internet connectivity.
Cable internet utilizes cable TV infrastructure to provide high speed internet.
Fiber optics internet transmits data as light signals through fiber optic cables offering high speed and reliability.
Satellite internet provides internet access internet signals through or via satellites and are essential for remote internet service in especially in remote areas.
Mobile internet uses cellular networks to access the internet while on the go.
The advantages of the internet are as follows; the internet enables global connectivity by allowing communication and access to information worldwide. The internet facilitates e-commerce activities such as online trade or shopping and digital transaction and service. The internet enables remote work and virtual collaboration. The internet enables online education and training.
The disadvantages of the internet are; the internet is very vulnerable to cyber threats such as hacking and malware. The internet is prone to information overload due to the vast amount of information available. The internet can lead to addition and decreased productivity. The internet may create a digital divide of unequal access as a result of social and economic disparities.
The internet find widespread application in all areas of modern life such as in business, education, health care, entertainment and many others too numerous to mention.
The future of the internet depends on the development of the following technologies; 5g and beyond wireless technologies which would enable a faster and more reliable internet connection. The growth and development of the internet of things will further enable interaction between man and machines, thereby transforming industries and daily life. Artificial intelligence coupled with internet applications will greatly enhance internet services, such as personalized service and Chabot. The future of quantum technologies when they are deployed will no doubt enable and enhance a more robust, faster and more secured internet data transmission service.
